Can someone become truly wise without enduring hardship? Or is pain an essential life teacher?

If I'm being honest, almost everthing that genuinely changed me came from some form of suffering. Failures, losses, fear, etc.

Many years ago, when I was applying to software jobs, I faced constant rejection. My confidence in my abilities was dwindling, but I didn't give up, I built a platform. That platform later became the top ranking site for that category on Google for awhile. It also opened up many opportunities that didn't exist before. I simply thought that if nobody wanted to hire me, I'd just create my own job. And it worked, for the most part.

Had I not faced these rejections, I would have kept a comforting life at a job, with no desire to create something.

Now, I don't think suffering automatically produces wisdom. There are plenty of people who suffer constantly, and never seem to find their way out of bitterness.

But I'm starting to think it might be necessary in the sense that wisdom requires having your illusions shattered; those illusions are usually shattered by pain, not comfort. It may also require a certain mindset. Suffering can either destroy you, or build you.

So, to answer the question: yes, I think suffering is necessary for wisdom and especially growth.
